Easy Prom Tips for Guys

Prom is a once-in-a-lifetime event and is often the first formal dinner dance teenagers attend. Unfortunately, most of the prom advice out there is about choosing the best hairstyle, prom dress, and makeup for the big night – not exactly tips for guys. Yet prom can be a romantic night for a gentleman to spend with his special lady, and knowing how to plan for the prom, get ready for the big date, and how to wrap up the evening as a gentleman can help guys approach prom with confidence

Your “Prom Night” is one of the evenings you will remember for the rest of your life. There are many things you can do that will make the evening an especially enjoyable one. Of course everyone’s idea of fun is different, so each of you will have slightly different needs, but there are some concerns and ideas that are relatively universal. These are three areas that we have found are asked about most often: How much will the evening cost? What are some ideas to make the evening more fun? and What should I do to prepare for unplanned occurrences? Remember, if you start planning three to four months in advance, you will best be able maximize your time and money.

Prom Tips for Guys

Obviously, the first part of prom preparation is asking a girl to be your date for the night. While some girls have abandoned the tradition of waiting until a guy asks first, I still strongly believe that most girls would rather have the guy take the first step. However, I am also fully aware that many guys are unsure of how to ask a date to prom; for that reason I have provided a few simple suggestions. First of all, you can never go wrong with flowers….at least with most girls. Flowers say a simple “I care about going with you enough that I went out of my way and bought you these” and that simply makes a girl feel special.

Plan in advance. Procrastination may work just fine with squeezing in your papers just before grades are due but it’s a bad choice to make for planning the prom. Ask the girl out early, rent or buy your suit in advance, order her corsage, make dinner reservations and take care of all of the other details of prom before the date is actually upon you. Believe me, this will significantly reduce your anxiety. It will also impress your date because she’ll feel like you’ve taken care of things for her and getting off on a good foot is going to make things easier.

Dress your very best. Haven’t a clue how fancy it is? Call your date and ask what to wear. If you’re going with a girl, ask her what color she’s wearing so you can be coordinated. Practice good chivalry. Pull out the chair for her. Open the car door for her, etc. Don’t be afraid to dance with her. If you’re shy, just close your eyes and ask. Most girls really don’t care if you’re good or not; they just want someone to have fun with. Remember that prom night isn’t meant to be completely about romance. It’s better to have several friends with you than just your significant other.
